Our wonderful Head Designer, Verity, recently visited the incredible Cactus Country with her family as part of their big Australian road trip...and check out her dress! Inspired by her day trip, we wanted to share with you some top tips for looking after your indoor succulents...

Top tip #1: Choose the right succulents for living inside

Especially since we're all stuck inside right now, bringing some greenery into your home is a great way to help you feel more relaxed, oxygenate the room and give you something to tend to.

Succulents make for great indoor plants because they don't require too much attention, plus they come in all kinds of beautifully-quirky shapes and colours. Here are a couple of great succulents perfectly suited to indoor life:

• Jade Plant
• Zebra Plant
• Crown of Thorns
• Aloe Vera
• Echeveria
• Panda Plant

Top tip #2: Water a lot but not very often

Surprisingly, your indoor succulents require quite a lot of water to thrive. And just like us, they need more energy when they're in their growth period.

However, overwatering can kill succulents and they don't like to be watered too often, so definitely don't water your succulents every day.

In order to find the perfect balance, you should water your succulents until the roots are soaked and then leave them alone to dry out again over the next few days.

Top tip #3: Plenty of light

Succulents love direct sunlight, so we suggest rotating your pots regularly to help your plants stand up straight, as they will tend to lean towards the sun.

You'll want to place your succulents in a spot that gets plenty of natural light, as they'll need around 6 hours of sun every single day, depending on the type of succulent.

Although, be careful not to scorch newly-planted succulents in too much sunlight. They will need to be gradually introduced to full sun exposure.

Top tip #4: Get rid of pesky bugs

Pesky bugs can latch onto and infest your succulents if not taken care of properly. 

For example, mealybugs and gnats are common bugs that are attracted to succulents. To avoid them, make sure you're not overwatering or over-fertalising your soil.

And to get rid of eggs, spray the soil with 70% isopropyl alcohol.

Top tip #5: Ensure good soil drainage

It's really important that your succulents don't become waterlogged to prevent rot and maintain good airflow around the roots.

One way to ensure drainage is to avoid glass containers or any pots without drainage holes, so that your succulent can breathe properly.

Terra-cotta pots are ideal for this.
