For one reason or another, a lot of people believe that linen is a fabric reserved for summer months only. Granted linen is known for its natural breathability, temperature regulating qualities, beautiful movement and comfort, but that does not mean to say it can’t be worn all year round…

With a couple of simple tweaks, linen can make for a great choice even in the coldest of winters. Below we have put together our winter linen style guide to help you along the way. 

Layering linen

Winter layering is the perfect way to incorporate linen into your wardrobe.

When picking your outfit, it’s always a good idea to start with some winter staples like a long-sleeve top, turtleneck or fitted knit jumper and then begin layering from there. 

These work beautifully under our linen overalls with some woolly tights and ankle boots for example.

Also, going for a higher neck top or knit makes laying different necklines easier.

Another style tip is to stick to tonal layering, so laying colours from a similar colour palette like blacks and greys or whites and beiges, as this helps to keep things simple especially if you’re incorporating a mixture of sleeve lengths or details like buttons etc.

But then you could always throw on a more colourful jacket or coat for example to add in a touch more colour and keep you nice and warm too of course.

Lastly, if you’re wearing a linen shirt over a long-sleeve basic, try unbuttoning it halfway down for a more relaxed, laid-back look.

Mix up textures

Mixing up different fabrics, like wool, cotton, rayon, silk etc, is a wonderful way to style your linen pieces in winter, as combining textures like this really helps to improve the cosiness of your overall outfit. 

As well as super soft and warm feeling materials, also consider adding in some more earthy textures too like leather and suede in your accessories.

Again, if you’re new to combining multiple fabrics in one look, stick to a more paired-back colour palette of warm neutrals or grey tones.

We love pairing our wide leg linen culottes with an over-sized knitted jumper in winter, and then maybe a wool coat, leather cross-body bag and suede ankle boots.

Or why not try mixing our linen pants with our cotton blouse over a long-sleeve turtleneck and finishing off the winter look with a long knitted cardigan. 

The key is to wear what feels good to you.

Cosy accessories

Okay so we’ve covered different ways to layer with linen and how to mix up your winter textures, our last style tip is to add in some cosy accessories.

For example, wear some knee-high woolly socks underneath our linen culottes. This is such a quick and easy trick for keeping warm and counteracting any drafts when wearing wider leg pant styles, and they’re not going to bunch up or fall down like tights can. 

Another idea is to drape a long, open scarf around your neck, almost like a little wearable blanket! As well as adding another soft texture, accessories like a knitted scarf are going to keep you cosy all day long.

And lastly, consider investing in some over-the-knee boots. Not only are they going to keep your feet and legs nice and warm, but they’re perfect for styling with linen dresses in winter, like our linen babydoll dress with some tights and a long, chunky-knit cardigan for example.
